Ask Luís! (#16): European Portuguese books online

Hello, everyone!

Here’s a new question, courtesy of Jamie Skinner:

Olá Luís!

I have been learning Portuguese for about 3 months now. I study really hard…. But I wanted to find some books to read on the kindle store.

All I can find for language learners is Brazilian Portuguese short stories. Do you happen to know any beginner/intermediate level Portuguese books?

Hello, Jamie, and thank you for your question!

I agree with you that the Kindle Store seems be quite lacking in European Portuguese books (I did find a few novels, like Jerusalém by Gonçalo M. Tavares and A Viagem do Elefante by José Saramago, but the language there might be a tad too advanced (vocabulary and grammar-wise) for someone who has been learning the language only for three months…

The best option would be to browse on website of Portuguese bookstores, like The Portuguese Bookshop which cater specifically for people interested in European Portuguese. Any children’s book or play would probably be good enough for you at this stage – just pick something with a subject that interests you and you’ll always learn some new words and expressions out of it!

If anyone else has extra suggestions (both of bookstores and appropriate books), please share them with everyone in the comments!
